ROD

Rod’s tale is one of intrigue and wonderment. After being shot down behind enemy lines in the Gulf War back in 1991, Rod ended up making his way out of Iraq into the eastern bloc country of Bulgaria. After Rod settled in the capital city of Sophia, he gravitated towards the burgeoning nihilistic black metal/punk scene where he took the stage name, King Lovecraft, and formed the pioneering band Satan’s Nutsack.  Despite several years of critical and commercial success within the underground of Bulgaria, he still felt empty and decided to head back to North America and try something new.

Due to his unquenchable love for chilies…he decided that Albuquerque, NM was the place to go. Whilst moving from job to job in Albuquerque, he picked up the just released Nintendo 64 in 1997 and soon discovered he was a master gamer…especially on Wave Race 64. After winning several city, state, and national championships, Rod was then hired on by gaming companies to test and develop new games. Some were hits…like Banjo-Kazooie and Starfox 64…whereas others were miserable failures (Snot Rockets, Donkey Punch 64, and The Legend of Zelda – The Janitor’s Revenge).

As happens every few years, the ‘itch’ to try something new happened again.  His new passion…Inuit throat singing (or katajjaq). Traditionally it had been done by Inuit women in duet form; however Rod was determined to master katajjaq and bring its beauty to the masses. After relocating to Aklavik, NWT he soon mastered the technique and began his mission to bring it to the world. After several hard fought years of working the club circuit in Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut, he realized that throat singing wasn’t going to ‘break’ and decided to move south to Windsor, ON.

It was in Windsor that Rod discovered his years of throat singing had refined his voice to be a perfect fit for radio.  Harkening back to his days as a musician, Rod also rediscovered his love of real rock n roll and began working part time at a rock station there.  It was this circuitous route that finally brought Rod to host his show at Rock 88.9.

Let’s have some fun Saint John!
